Step 1: Clean Your Stainless Steel Railing

Use a soft nylon brush to remove any dirt, then wash the railing with warm water and mild dish soap. Make sure to thoroughly dry all components with a soft cloth or a blow dryer.

If you notice rust on your stainless steel hardware, it's crucial to clean off all surface rust before applying any treatments. For rust, corrosion, or patina, we recommend starting with Boeshield Rust Free. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe application.

  • For light rust: Apply the solution to a soft cloth and gently wipe the rusted or spotted areas.
  • For heavy rust: Spray the solution directly on the rusted surface and scrub with a mildly abrasive pad. Wipe clean and repeat as needed.

WARNING: Avoid using all-purpose cleaners, chlorine bleach, or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the stainless steel.

 

Step 2: Protect Your Aluminum or Stainless Steel Components

To prevent rust and corrosion, apply Boeshield T-9 Rust & Corrosion Protection Waterproof Lubricant or your preferred stainless steel cleaner to all stainless steel components of your cable railing. Be sure to treat the tensioner set screw channel to prevent it from becoming clogged, ensuring smooth tension adjustments over time.

 

How Should I Treat Stainless Steel Hardware in Metal Posts?

The T-9 aerosol spray is perfect for applying directly to metal railings. After spraying, wipe off any excess for a light protective coating. If your railing includes wood components, apply the lubricant to a soft cloth or sponge first to avoid contact with the wood.

How Should I Treat Stainless Steel Hardware in Wood Posts?

For wood post railings, the T-9 squeeze bottle is ideal for precise application. Squeeze a small amount of lubricant onto a soft cloth or sponge, then apply it to all exposed stainless steel components.

WARNING: Avoid getting the lubricant on any wood surfaces, as it may cause discoloration.

 

Step 3: Repeat the Process as Needed

If you live within a mile of environments that expose your cable railing to elements like acid rain or salt air, it's best to treat your railing every 3-6 months, or as needed. Regular inspections will help you assess how your environment affects the railing. Treat it at the first sign of corrosion to prevent rust and maintain its integrity, as neglecting this can compromise safety.

For indoor or less-exposed installations, inspect your railing at the end of each season to catch and address any potential issues early on.

 

Maintaining Cable Tension Over Time

Re-tensioning your cables after installation is a normal part of maintaining your cable railing system. This is especially important when the railing is installed on new structures, as the foundation may settle or shift over time. Factors such as metal expansion, contraction, and stress on the cables can also require adjustments to keep the railing secure and visually appealing.

  • Inspect cable tension: If any cables begin to sag, tighten them using a 3/32” Allen wrench to adjust the set screw at either end.
  • Clean set screw channels: Regularly inspect each set screw channel for debris or buildup. If you encounter resistance while adjusting the set screw, clean and lubricate the channel to ensure smooth operation.
  • Examine posts for wear: In harsh environments, it's important to check the posts for signs of damage. Wood rot or rust can weaken the railing’s stability and safety, so prompt attention is essential.
